Fixing the shifting problem.
After taking off the box that all of the shifting goes through. One of the reasons for the hard shifing was found.

A broken pin on the shifting box.
Shown here with and without post.
This post is supposed to hold the box in place on the streering colum, by going through this slot and locating in that hole at the same time. You could try and reef down on the bolts that hold down the box but that would really not work to well, or for long and might break the aluminium box that controls the shifting.
Solution to fix this problem is shown here. On the underside of the shifting box there is a bracket to clamp the box down to the colum. Drilling a hole through this and into the metal of the colum. Thread this hole and put in a bolt to hold it in place. This should stop the steering colum from rotating and help with the hard shifting.
